You’re Gonna get Smacked
This past Sunday night was the night my 2-month-old son finally broke his Mom. To set the stage, we had just returned from a quick weekend trip where he had done well, all things considered. My wife and I were both exhausted from the trip and ready for a good night’s sleep before heading to work on Monday morning. Monday was set to be my wife’s first day back to work since our son was born and she was already dealing with all the emotions that come with a Mom having to leave her baby with someone else for the first time. My wife put our son to bed at his normal time and he started out sleeping well. He has been a pretty good sleeper since birth, so we both are thankful for that.
Then it happened, midnight came….he was up and he was screaming. My wife got up and comforted him as she normally would, but he could not be consoled. Finally, at two in the morning after two straight hours of screaming, and more than a few tears between the two of them, she called in the C team…aka “me”…to take over. My son had finally pushed my wife to her absolute breaking point and she needed to tap out. So, I took over, but not thirty minutes later out of the bedroom comes my wife seemingly refreshed and resolved to take over again. I forced her back to bed more than once that night. She just kept trying to get back in the ring to take over and finish the job. The situation hit my wife hard, but she just kept coming back.
Mom’s seem to have an internal drive that won’t let them quit. Even when they get pushed to the edge they pop right back. It is part of them that they cannot deny. They continue to push and push and push. In business, you are going to get smacked. A longtime customer will drop you, a sure sale will fall through, your processes are going to breakdown, or your revenues are going to fall short of your goals. These things happen. We can’t let these things beat us. If we are working towards achieving what drives us, what is so important to us that we can’t deny it, then we get back up and we keep fighting. That drive, that passion, that flame can’t be lit by someone else. You must identify your “It” and drive for it with all you have. Make It Rain, Make It Flow, Make It Grow!
